PROFINET

PROFINET is an industrial Ethernet standard for exchanging data between controllers and field devices such as drives, I/O and robots. Cyclic process data travels on a real-time channel, and configuration and diagnostics use standard IP communication. It is maintained by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI).

Study notes

  • Three conformance classes build on each other: CC-A (standard Ethernet, basic functions), CC-B, and CC-C (deterministic, isochronous transmission).
  • RT (real time) carries process data. IRT (isochronous real time) is for motion control and needs hardware support in the device.
  • Devices must be certified by an accredited PI Test Laboratory.
  • Cyclic RT process data travels directly on Ethernet layer 2; this registry lists only the UDP ports IANA assigns.
