PROFIdrive

PROFIdrive is a manufacturer-independent drive control profile standardized in IEC 61800-7 and GB/T 25740. It defines six Application Classes for connecting drives and controllers over PROFIBUS DP and PROFINET IO, covering speed control, positioning, and motion control. The profile includes an acyclic parameter manager and PI conformance certification.

Study notes

  • PROFIdrive defines six Application Classes (AC) covering the drive application range.
  • Application Class 1 uses a main setpoint such as a speed setpoint; speed control is handled entirely within the drive.
  • Application Class 1 examples include frequency converters for pumps, fans, and compressors.
  • Application Class 1 permits slave-to-slave communication between technological processes of individual drives.
  • Application Class 3 adds positioning control; the drive acts as an autonomous single-axis positioning drive while higher-level technological processes run on the controller.
  • Application Class 4 defines an interface between the speed setpoint interface and actual position value interface; speed control is executed on the drive and position control on the controller.
  • Application Class 4 requires clock synchronization, using PROFIBUS DP-V2 or PROFINET with IRT.
  • Application Class 5 is comparable to Application Class 4 but uses a position setpoint interface instead of a speed setpoint interface.
  • The PROFIdrive parameter manager operates via the acyclic communication channel and supports reading and writing parameter values and reading parameter attributes.
  • A multi-parameter service is defined for the acyclic parameter channel.
  • PROFIdrive is standardized in IEC 61800-7 and GB/T 25740.

Safety

  • Every PROFIdrive device has to pass a conformance test.
  • PI certification ensures that devices of different manufacturers with different functional scopes conform to the PROFIdrive profile specification.
  • The certification test is carried out by a PITL using the PROFIdrive Profile Tester.
  • The test report of a PITL serves as the basis for awarding a PROFIdrive certificate.
