Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a set of techniques that aims to keep every machine in a production process able to perform its required tasks. It requires participation from all employees, addresses the six major equipment losses, and covers the total life cycle of equipment. Operators take part in routine maintenance, improvement projects, and simple repairs.

Study notes

  • TPM was originally pioneered by Denso in the Toyota Group in Japan.
  • TPM is total in three senses: all-employee participation, total productivity across six major losses, and total equipment life cycle.
  • The six major losses are downtime, changeover time, minor stops, speed losses, scrap, and rework.
  • Unlike traditional preventive maintenance, TPM involves operators in routine maintenance, improvement projects, and simple repairs.
  • Daily operator activities include lubricating, cleaning, tightening, and inspecting equipment.
