PI PROFINET over TSN

PROFINET over TSN is an extension of PROFINET that uses Time-Sensitive Networking as an additional Layer 2 technology on Ethernet networks. It is intended for real-time industrial communication, with TSN providing bandwidth reservation, time synchronization, low latency and redundancy. The PROFINET specification V2.4 integrates TSN, and the industrial TSN profile is being developed under IEC/IEEE 60802.

Study notes

  • PROFINET over TSN uses TSN as an additional Layer 2 technology in the PROFINET architecture.
  • PROFINET specification V2.4 integrates TSN functionality.
  • The TSN profile for Industrial Automation is being developed under IEC/IEEE 60802.
  • TSN extends Ethernet with Quality of Service, bandwidth reservation, time synchronization, low latency and bumpless redundancy.
  • Configuration of communication paths moves from engineering to device or controller runtime; users define working clock master, data rate, domain name and update cycle scheduling.
  • TSN requires TSN-capable hardware; current Ethernet components cannot usually be extended to TSN by software.
  • RT and IRT mechanisms remain part of the PROFINET specification.
  • PROFINET with TSN addresses IRT clock-synchronous motion control applications and RT application areas.
  • PROFINET services include cyclic and acyclic data, alarms/diagnostics, and parameterization.
  • The PROFINET specification is updated as part of the IEC 61158 maintenance cycle.
  • First practical applications are expected when IEC/IEEE 60802 is adopted, from 2021.
