Module Type Package (MTP)

MTP (Module Type Package) is a manufacturer-neutral description of process module functions generated from a module's automation engineering. It is imported into a higher-level Process Orchestration Layer (POL) to integrate Process Equipment Assemblies (PEAs) and package units into modular production systems. The description covers facets such as HMI, process control, maintenance and diagnostics, safety and security, and alarm management.

Study notes

  • MTP is standardized through VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658, which describes the MTP concept, operating-screen modeling, module services, and exchanged data interfaces.
  • VDI 2776 covers process engineering design and operation of modular systems.
  • A Process Equipment Assembly (PEA) consists of at least one Functional Equipment Assembly (FEA) and has its own automation intelligence.
  • The Process Orchestration Layer (POL) coordinates and synchronizes PEAs and can be implemented in MTP-capable process control systems or other software such as MES.
  • MTP can be used for automation of modular production systems and for integration of package units into conventional plants.
  • MTP Specification V2.0.0 comprises Part 1 General Concept, Interfaces and Models; Part 2 Process Displays; Part 3 Base Interfaces; Part 4 Automation Services, Process Values, Text Definitions; Part 5 Runtime and Communication; Part 5.1 Runtime and Communication – OPC UA; Part 6 Events and Alarms.
  • PNO/PI is the MTP host responsible for further standardization, rights management, product certification, and marketing.
  • The MTP concept is intended to become the international IEC 63280 standard.
  • NAMUR NE 148 is referenced for modular production based on plug-and-produce.

Safety

  • MTP provides a manufacturer-neutral description including safety and security facets and alarm management.
  • PNO/PI is responsible for certifying MTP products.
  • Conformance tests are based on test labs.
