IO-Link Wireless

IO-Link Wireless is a wireless version of IO-Link for factory control systems. It transmits sensor and actuator signals over virtual point-to-point radio connections between an IO-Link Master and star-connected IO-Link Devices. It uses the 2.4 GHz ISM band with time and frequency division multiplexing and keeps the same cyclic and acyclic application interfaces as wired IO-Link.

Study notes

  • IO-Link Wireless is based on standardized wired IO-Link technology.
  • The application interfaces for cyclic and acyclic data are compatible with existing IO-Link descriptions.
  • Programming and system design do not change compared with wired IO-Link.
  • The architecture consists of an IO-Link Master and star-shaped connected IO-Link Devices.
  • Single point-to-point connections are mapped virtually via radio.
  • Virtual connections use a combination of time division multiplexing and frequency division multiplexing.
  • 8 Devices are grouped into tracks (TDM); 5 tracks per master are transmitted in parallel (FDM).
  • The document states no difference in processing wired IO-Link and IO-Link Wireless data.

Safety

  • Operating limit: up to 3 Wireless Masters can coexist in the same airspace.
  • Operating limit: each Wireless Master supports up to 40 Wireless Devices.
  • Operating limit: maximum 120 Wireless Devices within a 20x20 meter production cell.
  • Operating limit: 5 ms cycle time for 5 tracks per master transmitted in parallel.
  • FDM channel hopping must be optimized and synchronized for all connected Devices to maximize reliability and minimize packet error rate.
  • Uses the open 2.4 GHz ISM band divided into 80 1 MHz channels.
