CANopen CC

CANopen CC is a CAN-based communication system that defines higher-layer protocols and device/application profiles for embedded networks. It provides standardized communication objects for process data, configuration, and network management, and uses an object dictionary to store communication and application parameters. CANopen CC was originally designed for motion-oriented machine control and is also used in medical equipment, off-road vehicles, maritime electronics, railway applications, and building automation.

Study notes

CANopen CC is based on CAN CC; the document distinguishes it from CANopen FD, which is based on CAN FD.
CANopen CC uses a data link layer according to ISO 11898-1 and assumes a physical layer according to ISO 11898-2, without excluding other physical layer options.
CANopen CC bit timing is specified in CiA 301 and allows data rates from 10 kbit/s to 1000 kbit/s.
CANopen CC addressing schemata are based on the 11-bit CAN-ID, and CANopen CC also supports the 29-bit CAN-ID.
CANopen communication objects (COBs) support time-critical process data, configuration data, and network management data.
A CANopen device has three logical parts: the protocol stack, the application software, and the object dictionary.
The object dictionary uses a 16-bit index written as a 4-digit hexadecimal value; 1000h to 1FFFh covers communication parameters and 2000h to 9FFFh covers application-related parameters.
Application-related object dictionary parameters are split into proprietary 2000h to 5FFFh and standardized 6000h to 9FFFh ranges.
CANopen CC device capability can be evaluated by checking the related object dictionary entries that describe communication behavior.
