OASIS AMQP 1.0

AMQP 1.0 is an OASIS standard open internet protocol for business messaging. It defines a binary wire-level protocol and a layered specification covering a peer-to-peer transport over TCP, a type system and encoding, a message format, transactions, and security layers. It is symmetric, with no wire-level distinction between clients and brokers.

Study notes

  • Published as an OASIS Standard on 29 October 2012.
  • The specification is organized as Parts 0-5: Overview, Types, Transport, Messaging, Transactions, and Security, plus an XML DTD.
  • The protocol is symmetric: it defines no wire-level distinction between clients and brokers.
  • Part 1 defines the AMQP type system and type encodings that every conformant implementation must implement.
  • Part 2 defines a peer-to-peer transport protocol that operates over TCP; conformant implementations over TCP must implement Part 2.
  • Part 3 defines the messaging layer and message format; implementations that process messages must implement it.
  • Part 4 defines transactional messaging with two roles: transactional resource and transaction controller.
  • Part 5 defines security layers for authenticated and/or encrypted transport.
  • Conformant implementations must perform protocol negotiation and parse, process, and produce frames according to Parts 1 through 5.
  • Conformant implementations must not require extensions outside the specification to interoperate with other conformant implementations.
  • TCP server role implementations are strongly recommended to support SASL PLAIN and SCRAM-SHA1 mechanisms.
  • TCP client role implementations should be configurable to connect to TCP server implementations following the security recommendations.
