NIST Prognostics, Health Management, and Control (PHMC)

The Prognostics, Health Management, and Control (PHMC) project is a NIST research effort that delivers methods, protocols, and tools for sensing, diagnostics, prognostics, and control in manufacturing. It targets vendor-neutral, plug-and-play approaches so manufacturers can use equipment and process data to support maintenance and control decisions at factory floor level. The work is split into three research thrusts: machine tool linear axes diagnostics and prognostics, manufacturing process and equipment monitoring, and health and control management for robot systems.

Study notes

  • Scope covers ISA 95 manufacturing levels 0 (production process) through 3 (manufacturing operations management).
  • Three research thrusts: machine tool linear axes diagnostics and prognostics; manufacturing process and equipment monitoring; health and control management for robot systems.
  • Test beds sit at three levels: component-level (linear axis test bed), work-cell-level (robot systems test bed), and systems-level (networked machine tools and sensors in an active manufacturing facility).
  • Each thrust develops reference datasets, use cases, and test scenarios for public use.
  • Initial standards work focuses on extending MTConnect across manufacturing equipment and systems.
  • The robot systems thrust initially monitors degradation of tool center position accuracy of the robot arm and feeds this into work-cell control and maintenance strategies.
  • The project states that no open standards exist for sensing, PHM, and control from component to enterprise level; existing proprietary solutions are vendor-specific.
  • Project created March 12, 2014 and updated March 26, 2025.
