Makino MAG1

The MAG1 is a five-axis horizontal machining centre built for aluminium monolithic aerospace parts. It has an 800 x 1000 mm pallet with 1,520 mm X, 1,100 mm Y and 1,350 mm Z travels, and a 33,000 rpm, 120 kW spindle. The A-axis tilts 210 degrees (-110 to +100 degrees) and the B-axis rotates 360 degrees; there is no C-axis.

Study notes

  • Pallet size is 800 x 1000 mm.
  • Maximum workpiece envelope is ø1,500 x 1,500 mm.
  • Cutting feedrate is 50,000 mm/min, the same value as rapid traverse.
  • Automatic tool changer holds 120 tools, with 241 positions available as an option.
  • Tool-to-tool change time is 17 seconds and chip-to-chip time is 20 seconds.
  • Maximum tool diameter is 90 mm and maximum tool weight is 8 kg.
  • No C-axis is fitted; the rotary axes are A (210 degrees total) and B (360 degrees).
  • The machine can be linked to a Makino MMC automatic pallet transfer and storage system for unattended operation.
  • The document also lists imperial units: 1,968 ipm rapid, 2,866 lbs payload, 3.5 in tool diameter, 17.6 lbs tool weight.
