Makino EDBV8

The Makino EDBV8 is an electrical discharge machining (EDM) hole drilling machine for turbine engine blade and vane details. It performs fully submerged drilling with a water dielectric and has an integral 2-axis rotary table, automatic tool and guide change, and break-through detection. Its Hyper-i control provides touchscreen programming and electrode length management.

What is the X-axis travel of the Makino EDBV8?
800 mm, per EDBV8 (makino.com).

Study notes

  • Water dielectric system uses an integrated reservoir in the base casting, with chiller, water filtration, and de-ionization systems.
  • The work tank is a 3-sided programmable rise-and-fall type; the integral 2-axis rotary table allows access to multiple workpiece sides in one setup.
  • The tooling system performs ATC (Automatic Tool Change) and AGC (Automatic Guide Change) simultaneously using a common pre-assembled Die Guide and Electrode unit exchanged within 45 seconds.
  • A Middle Guide system prevents electrode bending and vibration during machining with long electrodes.
  • The Hyper-i control uses a 24-inch class high-definition touch screen and Windows 7 operating system.
  • Hyper-i control functions include canned cycles for diffuser shape programming, graphically driven part pick-up cycles, and intelligent electrode length management.
  • Rotary table axes are listed as A: 360° and B: -110/+30°.
  • Z stroke is listed as 500 mm, with 750 mm shown in parentheses.
  • Tank size is 1,400 x 1,050 mm.
  • Maximum workpiece weight is 50 kg, with 150 kg stated for an optional rotary table.
  • Break-through detection is stated to detect electrode break-through within 1 second or 0.040 in (1.0 mm) of depth.
  • The Hyper-i control is named but has no matching controller reference id.

Safety

  • Fully submerged machining eliminates the need for traditional manual splash guards and prevents shop-floor slip hazards caused by water over-spray.
