Makino EDBV3

The Makino EDBV3 is an EDM hole-drilling machine for blade and vane cooling holes and diffusors. It drills fully submerged in de-ionized water and has X/Y/Z travels of 370/270/500 mm, a 2-axis rotary table, and a 24-position automatic tool changer. A break-through detection circuit stops back-striking when drilling into hollow cavities.

Quick answers

What is the X-axis travel of the Makino EDBV3?
370 mm, per EDBV3 (makino.com).

Study notes

  • Uses Makino Hyper-i control with Windows 7 and a 24-inch class high-definition touch interface.
  • Control includes pre-programmed cycles for diffuser shapes, intelligent electrode length management, and multiple graphical pick-up cycles.
  • Die Guide and Electrode tooling are loaded and exchanged together as an assembled unit; combined ATC and AGC exchange time is within 30 seconds.
  • The dielectric reservoir is integrated into the base casting; water quality is maintained by an on-board chiller, water filtration, and de-ionization systems.
  • The programmable 3-sided Rise and Fall work tank provides unrestricted access to the work tank for load/unload and automation.
  • Maximum workpiece weight is 5 kg standard, with a 15 kg optional rotary table.
  • Tank size is 790 x 611 mm (31.1 x 24.1 in).
  • The machine is configured with an integrated 2-axis rotary table for positioning the workpiece to access multiple sides in a single setup.

Safety

  • Break-through detection circuit prevents back-striking when EDM drilling into hollow cavities; detection occurs within 1 second or 0.040 in (1.0 mm) of depth.
  • Fully submerged machining in de-ionized water minimizes water over-spray and eliminates the splash guards used on traditional EDM drilling machines.
  • Middle Guide system supports long electrodes during machining to prevent whipping or bending.
