# Eclipse Zenoh

Protocols · `Zenoh` · verification: source checked

Zenoh is a publish/subscribe and query protocol that unifies data in motion, data at rest, and computations. It provides primitives for pub/sub, geo-distributed storages, queries and queryables, plus routing across decentralized networks. It can run on OSI Layer 2 and on constrained transports, with a 5-byte wire overhead.

## Specification

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Transports | ethernet_l2, other |
| Architecture | publish subscribe |
| Encoding | binary |

## Study notes

- Wire overhead is 5 bytes.
- The smallest implementation has a 300-byte footprint on an Atmel 8-bit microcontroller.
- Designed to run over constrained transports such as LPWAN and LowPAN.
- Implemented in Rust; APIs are available for multiple programming languages.
- Queries and queryables can be used to implement patterns such as RPC and map-reduce.
- Storages support sharding and replication and are geo-distributed.
- Routing infrastructure is decentralized and intended to scale out to Internet scale.
- Pub/sub supports several levels of reliability, dynamic discovery, fragmentation and wire-level batching.
- Off-the-shelf throughput can be increased through the batching API.
- Project is in Incubating state and is licensed under Eclipse Public License 2.0.
- Listed releases range from 0.5.0 (Aithusa, 2021-09-30) to 1.9.0 (Longwang, 2026-04-17).
