MTConnect is a read-only standard for collecting data from machine tools and other manufacturing equipment. An agent collects data from the machine, often through an adapter, and serves it over HTTP as XML or JSON documents with a shared vocabulary.

## Specification

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Transports | http, tcp |
| Architecture | request response |
| Encoding | mixed |

### Default ports

| Port | Transport | Secure | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5000 | tcp | false | HTTP requests to the agent |

## Study notes

- The agent answers four REST requests: /probe (what the device can report), /current (latest values), /sample (time series) and /assets.
- Adapters often feed agents with SHDR, a plain-text protocol of timestamped key|value pairs over TCP.
- MTConnect reads data only. It does not send commands to the machine.
