# ODVA CIP

Protocols · `CIP` · verification: source checked

CIP is a media-independent industrial communication protocol associated with ODVA. It uses a producer-consumer model and an object-oriented upper layer to provide common messages and services for control, safety, energy, synchronization and motion, information, and network management. CIP defines Device Profiles for interoperability and can integrate Modbus, HART, and IO-Link devices through native translation services.

## Specification

## Safety

- CIP Safety is named as a CIP service.

## Study notes

- CIP uses a producer-consumer communication model; a producer can send application information once to many consumers.
- At the upper layers CIP is strictly object oriented; each CIP object has attributes, services, connections, and behaviors.
- A device's Object Model is the grouping of objects implemented in that device.
- Device Profiles define a standard grouping of objects plus configuration options and I/O data formats for interoperability across vendors.
- CIP provides native translation services for integration of Modbus, HART, and IO-Link devices.
- CIP networks named in the document include EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet.
- CIP-related services named in the document include CIP Safety, CIP Security, CIP Energy, CIP Sync, and CIP Motion.
- CIP allows seamless bridging and routing without programming or configuring intermediate devices.
