# Right-sized tools

Operations · `Right-sized tools` · verification: source checked

Right-sized tools are process equipment sized in small increments of capacity so that capacity and labour can be added in step with demand. They are highly capable, easy to maintain and therefore available whenever needed, quick to changeover and easy to move. Examples are small washing machines, heat treatment ovens and paint booths placed in process sequence in cells to support continuous flow.

## Study notes

- Right-sized tools are defined by five characteristics: highly capable, easy to maintain (hence available to produce whenever needed), quick to changeover, easy to move, and installed in small increments of capacity.
- Small increments of capacity are intended to facilitate capital linearity and labour linearity.
- Examples given are small washing machines, heat treatment ovens and paint booths.
- Examples can be placed in process sequence in cells to facilitate continuous flow.
- Related terms referenced: Capital Linearity; Labor Linearity.
- Contrasted term: Monument.
