# DMAIC

Operations · `DMAIC` · verification: source checked

DMAIC is a structured five-phase method for improving processes and solving problems: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. Each phase has a defined activity, from stating the problem and its goals, through collecting data and finding root causes, to implementing and then monitoring solutions. It is used to identify and remove defects and to reduce process variation.

## Study notes

- The five phases in order are Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.
- The Define phase sets the specific issue to address plus the goals and objectives of the project.
- The Measure phase identifies the key performance indicators (KPIs) for project success and determines the baseline process performance.
- The Analyze phase uses data from the Measure phase to find root causes, with tools such as cause and effect diagrams and statistical analysis.
- The Improve phase develops and tests potential solutions, selects the best ones and implements them in the process.
- The Control phase establishes control mechanisms such as ongoing monitoring and data analysis to keep the process stable.
