Operations · `Changeover` · verification: source checked

Changeover is the process of switching production from one product or part number to another on a machine or on a series of linked machines by changing parts, dies, molds, fixtures and similar items. It is also called a setup. Changeover time is measured as the time elapsed between the last piece of the run just completed and the first good piece produced after the changeover.

## Study notes

- Changeover applies both to single machines (e.g. stamping press, molding machine) and to linked machines (e.g. assembly line or cell).
- Changeover is also referred to as a setup.
- Changeover time starts at the last piece of the completed run and ends at the first good piece after the changeover.
- The document cross-references Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED); no further detail on SMED is given.
