# LinuxCNC G89 Boring Cycle, Dwell, Feed Out

Instructions · `G89` · verification: source checked

G89 is a canned boring cycle. It feeds the Z axis to the programmed depth at the current feed rate, dwells for P seconds, then retracts at the feed rate to clear Z. It is programmed with position and R retract values, and L can repeat the cycle.

## Specification

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Language | gcode |
| Code | G89 |
| Group | Canned Cycles |
| Syntax | G89 (X- Y- Z-) or (U- V- W-) R- L- P- |
| Dialect | LinuxCNC |

### Parameters

| Name | Description | Data type |
|---|---|---|
| X | | |
| Y | | |
| Z | | |
| U | | |
| V | | |
| W | | |
| R | Retract position along the axis perpendicular to the selected plane. | |
| L | Optional number of repeats; L=0 is not allowed. | integer |
| P | Dwell time in seconds. | number |

## Safety

- It is an error if all axis words are missing, axis words from different groups are used together, a required P number is negative, L does not evaluate to a positive integer, rotary axis motion is used, inverse time feed rate is active, or cutter compensation is active.
- If the XY plane is active and the Z number is missing while the same canned cycle was not already active, it is an error; it is also an error if R is less than Z.

## Study notes

- Canned cycles are performed relative to the currently selected plane; most descriptions assume the XY plane.
- For the UVW plane family, substitute U, V, W for X, Y, Z in the cycle instructions.
- Rotary axis words are not allowed in canned cycles.
- The R number is always sticky; L is not sticky.
- Preliminary motion includes a rapid move parallel to the active plane to the programmed location and a rapid move to the R position when the current Z position is below R.
