# LinuxCNC G85

Instructions · `G85` · verification: source checked

G85 is a LinuxCNC canned cycle for boring or reaming; it can also be used for drilling or milling. After the common preliminary motion, the Z axis feeds to the programmed Z position, retracts at feed rate to the R plane when that plane is lower than the initial Z, and then retracts at traverse rate to clear Z.

## Specification

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Language | gcode |
| Code | G85 |
| Group | canned cycles (G80-G89) |
| Syntax | G85 (X- Y- Z-) or (U- V- W-) R- L- |
| Dialect | LinuxCNC |

### Parameters

| Name | Data type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| X | real | X-axis position in the selected plane, or increment in incremental distance mode. |
| Y | real | Y-axis position in the selected plane, or increment in incremental distance mode. |
| Z | real | Z-axis position or increment along the axis perpendicular to the selected plane when the XY plane is active; the Z number is sticky. |
| U | real | U-axis word used with UVW-family planes instead of X. |
| V | real | V-axis word used with UVW-family planes instead of Y. |
| W | real | W-axis word used with UVW-family planes instead of Z. |
| R | real | Retract position along the axis perpendicular to the currently selected plane; always sticky. |
| L | integer | Number of repeats; optional, not sticky, and must evaluate to a positive integer. |

## Study notes

- G85 is part of the G80-G89 canned cycle group in LinuxCNC.
- Canned cycles are performed with respect to the currently selected plane, and rotary axis words are not allowed.
- The R word is sticky in canned cycles; the L word is optional and is not sticky.
- The final retract height is affected by the G98/G99 canned cycle return level setting.
