# LinuxCNC G82 Drilling Cycle, Dwell

Instructions · `G82` · verification: source checked

G82 is a LinuxCNC canned cycle for drilling that pauses, or dwells, at the bottom of the hole before retracting. It drills at the current feed rate to the Z position, holds for the time given by the P word, then rapids back to clear Z. It behaves like G81 with the added dwell.

## Specification

| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Language | gcode |
| Code | G82 |
| Group | canned cycles |
| Syntax | G82 (X- Y- Z-) or (U- V- W-) R- L- P- |
| Dialect | LinuxCNC |

### Parameters

| Name | Data type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| X | real | Destination X position. |
| Y | real | Destination Y position. |
| Z | real | Destination Z position at the bottom of the hole. |
| U | real | Destination U position when a UVW plane is active. |
| V | real | Destination V position when a UVW plane is active. |
| W | real | Destination W position when a UVW plane is active. |
| R | real | Retract position along the axis perpendicular to the selected plane. |
| L | integer | Number of times to repeat the cycle (positive integer). |
| P | real | Dwell time in seconds at the bottom of the hole. |

## Safety

- It is an error to program the cycle when cutter compensation is active.
- It is an error to use inverse time feed rate mode during a canned cycle.
- It is an error if the R number is less than the Z number in the XY plane.
- An L number must evaluate to a positive integer; L=0 is not allowed.
- A P number is required and a negative P number is an error.

## Study notes

- Canned cycles G81 through G89 are performed with respect to the currently selected plane; in the XY plane the cycle acts along Z, and in the UV plane U, V and W replace X, Y and Z.
- Rotary axis words are not allowed in canned cycles, and XYZ words cannot be mixed with UVW words on the same cycle line.
- R is the retract position along the axis perpendicular to the selected plane and is always a sticky number; X, Y and Z are also sticky within a repeated cycle.
- Preliminary motion moves the Z axis to the R position with a rapid only if the current Z is below R, and this happens once regardless of L.
- L gives the number of repeats; in incremental mode X and Y offsets accumulate across repeats while R and Z do not change.
- G98 retracts to the Z position from before the series of cycles started, G99 retracts to the R position; switching between cycle modes does not reset the G98 plane.
- G80 or any other modal group 1 motion code cancels the cycle.
- Example: G90 G82 G98 X4 Y5 Z1.5 R2.8 P2 drills at X4 Y5, feeds to Z1.5, dwells 2 seconds, then rapids clear.
