# Makino UPV-5

Hardware · `UPV-5` · verification: source checked

The Makino UPV-5 is a wire EDM machine built on the Uj-Series stationary-table platform, intended for large, high-precision parts such as fine-blanking and stamping die components. It uses an oil-based dielectric instead of deionized water, which allows machining at lower discharge power and produces surface finishes down to 0.02 µmRa. It is controlled by the Hyper i control with a 24-inch class touch screen and includes an integrated fire suppression system.

## Safety

- Integrated Fire Suppression system is standard equipment, intended for reliable extended unattended operation.

## Study notes

- Oil dielectric is chemically neutral, so steel workpieces do not rust in the machine and carbide binder (cobalt) depletion is avoided.
- Surface finish capability stated as 0.02 µmRa (1 µinRa).
- Stationary table design with a 3-sided rise and fall work tank for work zone access.
- Control is the Hyper i, with a 24-inch class high-definition touch screen, Handbox, on-board electronic manuals, E-Tech Doctor function and video tutorials; it is not in the available controller list.
- U-axis and V-axis travel are each ±1.97 in (±50 mm).
- Maximum workpiece size is 960 mm x 690 mm x 100 mm; tank size is 810 mm x 550 mm.
- Optional integrated 3D Setup Probe and Rotary Table are offered for cutting tool insert manufacturing.
- The document also references the smaller UPV-3 machine on the same Uj-Series platform.
