# Makino a500Z

Hardware · `a500Z` · verification: source checked

The Makino a500Z is a horizontal machining centre with five axes: three linear axes (X, Y, Z) and a direct-drive B axis and slant-style C axis carried on the pallet. It machines workpieces up to Ø630 mm × 500 mm high weighing up to 400 kg, using a standard 14,000 rpm spindle. An integrated automatic pallet changer swaps pallets so fixtures can be loaded while the other pallet is cutting.

## Study notes

- Z-stroke is 500 mm to 700 mm, depending on the position of the rotary axes.
- Standard spindle is 14,000 rpm; an optional 20,000 rpm high-speed spindle is offered for small-diameter tools.
- Standard tool magazine holds 60 tools in a ring type; optional matrix magazines hold 133, 218 or 313 tools.
- Tool-to-tool change time is 0.9 s; maximum tool diameter is 170 mm and maximum tool weight is 12 kg.
- Both rotary axes are direct drive: B axis 360° unlimited, C axis 180° in a slant-style unit.
- B-axis rapid rotation rate is 45,000 °/min.
- Cutting feedrate is 50,000 mm/min.
- All axes have closed-loop active temperature control as standard.
- Control is the Makino Pro-6 CNC, described as FANUC based, with SGI.5 high-speed machining control.
- Pallet size is 500 mm and the automatic pallet changer is integrated into the machine structure.
- Spindle peak power is 37 kW and peak torque is 303 N·m.
